Wim' shares with you a city steeped in history. Richelieu is nicknamed "the gateway city" because of its strategic role as a gateway to the Touraine region. In the 17th century, the town was designed by Cardinal Richelieu to serve as a fortified stronghold and checkpoint on the main roads leading into the Loire Valley. The enclosure and its monumental gates surround the city. Richelieu includes three real doors (from Châtellerault, Loudun and Chinon) and three false doors to guarantee the symmetry and aesthetics desired by the cardinal. The whole was classified as a historic monument in 1879, and registered in 1992.

Richelieu is known for its history closely linked to the family of the famous Cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis, also known as Cardinal de Richelieu. The city was founded in the 17th century by the cardinal himself, who made it his residence and made it a symbol of his political power.
The town of Richelieu is often described as a remarkable example of classic 17th century town planning. It is built according to a regular plan in the form of a quadrilateral.
